To Lake Louise

Today started with a real highlight... Emptying our waste tanks. I rehearsed it in my mind, banishing any images of Robin Williams. The process was actually quite straightforward.

It's cold and gloomy today. The Rockies look even more commanding shrouded in swirling dark clouds with rising valley mist wisps contrasting as foreground to their ink green slopes.

It wasn't a long drive to Lake Louise along Highway number 1 again. Today is the first day of School holidays in Canada so we were a little unsure whether we would get a campsite at LL; it's one of the most popular tourist destinations in this area. To ensure our spot we planned to leave early. This didn't happen (are you picking up a theme here?). Our fears became panic attack when we hit this traffic jam on the approach to Lake Louise community

Surely there couldn't be this many people checking in at midday; this was not good! Mary disembarked to investigate. Not long after her departure the queue started moving. The problem was road resurfacing. It seemed a little late to be preparing for the tourist onslaught on the very day of increased traffic; Maybe they were a little behind schedule...

The Lake Louise carpark was enough for us.. It was crowded and we hadn't seen a camping ground. The trusty Internet came to the rescue.. There was an RV park at Moraine Lake, just 12 km away. We headed up a windy road with spectacular views.. And there it was... The amazingly picturesque Moraine Lake... Minus the RV park. Undaunted we decided to have a quick look at the lake and then find the park. My Internet reception on the iPhone had cut out just as I was downloading a map of the park so we asked a ranger. Nope.. No park here. There must be another Moraine Lake somewhere else in the world! Trusty Internet!

We descended back to the site of the traffic jam and quickly located the RV park which we had blissfully passed by and soon we were hitched up to the electricity and soon we were..... Snoozing. A sudden wave of exhaustion overcame three of us. V was the only one with energy which she put into cooking up a storm... "vegetarian Chilli". She had omitted the Chilli, so this dish is best called "vegetarian". It took hours to prepare.. Partly because of the recipe and partly because the facilities in the van were substandard (the frying pan warps substantially when heated!)

Rain fell lightly for a few hours which made the van feel quite cosy. It was a pleasant sleep and probably necessary after the fairly physically demanding day yesterday. The van filled with delicious aromas and we started feeling hungry.. Maybe we would eat dinner and then visit Lake Louise afterwards. It was still overcast, so photography was probably not going to be picture-postcard, but we can't be too choosy. It seems the rainy weather has set in again.

After dinner we nipped up to Lake Louise for a gander. It was raining and the lake looked gloomy. We took a few photographs

Yep... gloomy

We descended to our campsite. We were tired now and quickly fell asleep.

  1. what's happening with the weather? Where is the sunshine? Tis gloomy here too. Just lost $100 and felt so cranky. A shop assistant, with more faith in the world suggested I check at the supermarket, where I may have lost it. Would you believe someone had handed it in? Got to have faith!!!
